In a bold move reminiscent of giving a wet noodle a stern talking-to, the U.S. Department of the Treasury has decided to take down Russia-based bulletproof hosting provider Aeza Group, a modern-day cybercriminal Airbnb. Apparently, hosting a who’s-who of ransomware aficionados and cyber goons worldwide wasn’t in line with U.S. hospitality guidelines.
The U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced these sanctions after finally realizing that the digital ‘room service’ offered by Aeza Group included more than just towels and toothbrushes. While their services boasted ‘No Questions Asked,’ the U.S. seems to have finally asked a few.
Even the U.K. branch, Aeza International Ltd., wasn’t spared the American side-eye, proving that global reach in digital crime now comes with equal opportunity sanctions. But fret not, cybercriminals wondering where to safely nest: rumor has it the dark web’s got plenty of other vacancies!
