In a move that shocked absolutely no one, the notorious Russian cyber threat group TA446, also charmingly known as Callisto, has once again tiptoed into the realm of digital espionage. Clearly, inspired by the excitement of not being invited to international conferences, they’ve decided to crash the party with their new favorite toy — the DarkSword iOS exploit kit.
Like a toddler with a fascination for sharp objects, TA446 is wielding DarkSword in a targeted spear-phishing campaign, aiming their geopolitical arrows straight at the heart of clueless iPhone users everywhere. It’s almost touching how they keep the art of phishing alive, as if ‘Delete suspicious emails’ isn’t written in every cybersecurity manual ever.
Proofpoint, the cyber world’s neighborhood watch, was kind enough to shine a light on this caper, attributing the shenanigans to TA446 with the same confidence one has in the sun rising every morning. Meanwhile, the rest of us are left to wonder if there’s a way to tell these guys that there’s a sale on anonymity at the local self-help store. But then again, who doesn’t love a predictable villain?
