In the latest episode of Oops, I Did It Again (Tech Edition), Google Cloud Platform has been hit by a bug that made its security look like Swiss cheese to security researchers. Their recent quest led them to a treasure chest of a bug that could let attackers elevate their privileges faster than a toddler learning new words.
Google, in an audacious display of nonchalance, assured users that the vulnerability was a mere ‘unintentional feature’ of the Cloud Composer service, which they insist works perfectly…as long as it’s not under a malicious attack. Meanwhile, Apache Airflow, the framework behind the orchestrated chaos, shrugged invisibly, claiming it was too busy orchestrating to notice any nefarious activities.
Security experts worldwide have applauded the ‘novel’ approach of mixing orchestration with a dose of breach potential, labeling this bug as the next big thing since social media oversharing. As for developers using GCP, it’s time to consider whether ‘Cloud Build’ also means ‘Cloud Break’ in a parallel universe.
