In a bold move to combat fraud and make fraudsters work a bit harder, India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has come up with the revolutionary idea of linking messaging apps to active SIM cards. Because, as we all know, scammers can’t possibly manage to get hold of a SIM card, right?
Messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal are now tasked with transforming into hyper-vigilant guardians of communication, making sure that no rogue message is sent from an unapproved device. The new motto seems to be: if you can’t beat the scammers, make them pay for a SIM card.
With this genius plan, India is set to lead the world in SIM card verification technology. After all, if you can’t inconvenience the scammers, at least you can inconvenience everyone else.
