In a surprising turn of events, Russian-aligned hackers known as InedibleOchotense have been using Slovak cybersecurity company ESET as their very own impersonation costume. Apparently, they’ve confused cybersecurity with cyberbuffet, targeting Ukrainian entities who probably thought they were just getting menus by email.
This ‘phishing’ campaign—minus the chips and tartar sauce—was spotted in May 2025. The hackers sent out spear-phishing emails and even Signal text messages, which humorously suggests they were really confident someone would RSVP to a secret hacker dinner party.
Security experts were baffled when they discovered the hackers redirecting victims to a page offering not Kalambur Backdoor, but rather a ‘Backdoor Surprise’—which is just like a normal backdoor, except it comes with extra spyware on the side. ESET itself is totally unaffiliated and is probably wondering where their invite to this unusual chef’s table went.
