In a shocking revelation that surprised absolutely nobody, cybersecurity researchers have uncovered a new Android malware called AntiDot. Apparently, this little digital pest has wormed its way into over 3,775 devices, proving once again that your phone can be both your best friend and worst enemy. It’s like that time your Roomba tried to eat your cat.
The malware, operated by the charmingly named threat actor LARVA-398, operates much like Robin Hoodโif Robin Hood had been financially motivated and sold malware as a service on underground forums. LARVA-398 is the gift that keeps on giving, as long as the gift you want is a wide range of mobile campaigns targeting your data.
AntiDot exploits our love for technology and our ignorance of it. By using overlays, virtualization, and NFC theft, the malware turns your phone into a digital Swiss army knife, which would be useful if it weren’t trying to stab you in the back. It’s almost enough to make you long for the days of flip phones and pagersโback when your biggest worry was a butt-dial, not a bank account heist.
